President's Challenge & Show-N-Tell
During our general meetings, members get to show their creations. At the end of the year the president of the club creates a list of 12 turning projects for the coming year that the members can do and bring to the meeting to show. These are called the President's Challenges. People who finish all the challenges for that year are awarded the Ironman award. In addition, members can bring, show and talk briefly about any turning work they have done. These are called Show-N-Tell.
2022 Challenges
JAN
It Came Out Of The Sky
Fantasy Creation inspired by Creedence Clearwater song from 1969.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - It Came Out Of The Sky
You can use this song as inspiration or make up your own story, as long as the first six words are "It Came Out Of The Sky".
FEB
You Better Shop Around
Participants will visit the shops of 2 club members. Shop host will give you some item of material and you will use that item in a turning or make a turning from it. What is given is negotiable. Report ideas from the shop you find useful or inspiring.
You can find the shops of SVW members by going to the page
https://www.svwoodturners.com/shops
There is a phone number below their names on each of those pins in the map. You can call those numbers and arrange to visit their shops.
MAR
Can You Handle It
Make a tool handle. Upgrade one of your existing turning tools. Buy a new tool unhandled and make it yours. (5% discount from D-Way tools for club members)
APR
Bird Bath
Springtime for our Feathered Friends. This one is for the birds.
MAY
Line Exercise
What is Art? Are you an artist? Do you want to be an artist? Do you make Art, or Craft?
If you really want something to happen, you need to get out of its way and let it happen. It is not a bowl we are making. It is a perfect line. We are here to be of service to the line.
Make the line. Change the line. Help the line discover what it wants to be. Keep refining the line until it is Right. If you SEE the line you will know when it is not right.
"No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it's not the same river and he's not the same man."
BE HERE NOW and experience being in the moment of true creation.
JUN
True Grit
Turning made without using sandpaper.
Challenge your ability to cut well. Scraping is OK if you are That Way, but NO sandpaper anywhere. Look for ways to improve your cutting skills.
JUL
School Donation
Special project for school auction.
AUG
Tapering Off
Turn some Morse Tapers on your own and incorporate into your turning methods. Share the best use you have found that employs this idea.
eg: Friction chuck for Lamp pulls, Pen Mandrels, Sphere turning centers, Sanding profiles.
If you did not receive a Morse Taper Jig by Steven Dahout please let me know. I still have a few available, but there are not enough to give everyone a second copy.
- Steve
SEP
On Strike
Turn a Mallet / Striking tool.
Mini Mallet or "Tapper" can be all wood or use other materials as desired.
These can be real Keepers. I still have and use the mallet I made 30 years ago & love it.
- Steve

*Club has arranged to get 3/8 rod hardened M42 Cobalt HSS from D-way Tools. Make fixed handle or quick change to suit.

DEC
